ENGLAND
After the Euro 2020 final, England is aiming for their first world gold medal since 1966. Gareth Southgate has an excellent squad, led by the previous World Cup’s top scorer, Harry Kane.
The English have no problems with the attack, but the defense is troubling. MU defender Harry Maguire has become a meme, Ben Chillwell, Kyle Walker and Rhys James are all out with injuries and Southgate cannot decide on his basic tactical scheme.
The results of recent games should also worry the fans: England finished last in the group of the League of Nations without a single victory.
IRAN
In September, Carlos Queiroz returned to the Iranian national team after three and a half years. The Portuguese specialist has played only two matches so far, and the main stars of the team, Serdar Azmoun and Mehdi Taremi, have each scored a goal.
Iran was the best performer in the Asian qualifying tournament, but finished in a difficult group. The Persian team will probably not be without points, but it is difficult to see it in the playoffs.
USA
The Americans missed the World Cup in Russia, but come back with a promising team that aims to reach the highest stages at the 2026 World Cup at home. Many of the players in the U.S. national team are on the radar of European top clubs: Christian Pulisic, Weston McKenny, Serginho Dest, Giovanni Reyna.
Gregg Berhalter’s team can definitely make the group and even contend for the quarterfinals, but they should not be expected to finish in the top four.
WALES
For 33-year-old Gareth Bale this is the first and probably the last World Cup. So the Welsh captain intends to repeat the team’s success at the 1958 World Cup and get out of the group. But the form should seriously worry the fans: the Welsh finished last in their group of the League of Nations with one point.
The Welsh were eliminated in the 1/8 finals at UEFA EURO 2020 a year and a half ago and will now be fighting for a playoff with the USA, with Wales already in the first round against their direct rival.
